Dating: Long Distance
PLEASE READ! Long distance relationships are not what they are portrayed to be. They are not as hard, emotionally draining, or as impossible as people assume. Right now, I am living 3 hours away from my boyfriend (who plays a varsity sport). We see each other once or twice a month. We are both happy, both with room to live our own lives but always being able to catch up at the end of the night. We still love each other, nobody has been unfaithful, and it is relatively easy. The time we spend together is always quality time, and I do not regret staying with him.If you love someone and think you they could be the person for you, go for it. The worst that could happen is that it doesn't work out and you part ways. It is entirely possible, do not give up just because of what you THINK might happen.

Pros of a long distance relationship...
1. The time you spend together is really exciting and precious
2. You have the freedom to be yourself and make friends on your own terms
3. You always have lots to talk about with your S/O because you're apart during the day
4. It tests whether the relationship is really worth it
5. Meeting their new friends means more friends for you!
6. Sex/physical intimacy is so much better when you've been waiting for it
7. It will show you how much your partner really values you
8. You don't need to pick between your friends and partner during the week
9. It helps keep you focused

Currently enrolled in Professional Addiction studies diploma program through McMaster CCE and looking for any funds available to help me pay for this diploma. I work full-time as a firefighter and I am finding it hard to find any grants or scholarships that I could apply for.

HELP - Required to Withdraw UWO FIRST YEAR
Hi guys,

I am a first year in Western University currently just doing Medical Sciences. I got an email today telling me I am required to withdraw from the university for a minimum of 12 months. I honestly, am shocked and have no idea what to do. 

Just some background info, I found first year very difficult and did fail a fair amount of classes, and this was for many reasons however none of them I think are good enough for the Deans Waiver. I do have depression and trichtrichotillomania which is fueled by stress and only makes my depression worse. However, I come from a family that does not "believe" in mental illness so I have no proof of this. 

I am taking summer school, and did plan on switching into social science (more specifically psych, the only course I enjoyed). I thought the most I would get is probation, but they seemed to have skip that step.

So I need help. What should I do? Should I go ahead with the Deans Waiver, and if so, what should be included?

Should I drop SHSM?
Hey Yconic community! 
Currently I'm a grade 11 student in Health and Wellness SHSM and I want to drop it, just because I'll have to do the co-op over the summer because I couldn't fit it into my day-school schedule. There are other things that I feel would be better for me over the summer like getting a job or doing research with uni profs. But like I don't want Uni's to think I'm lazy and not committed because I'm pretty sure it shows up on your transcript that you dropped it. I'm planning to go into health sciences. So I dunno, what are your opinions?

Advice on long distance relationship in university!
Is it possible to keep up a relationship when you and your significant other go to different universities and will be hours apart?   My boyfriend and I are in grade 12 and have been together for a while in highschool, however, we want to go to completely different unis (5 Hours apart) Is the relationship worth keeping? Or should we just end it before uni to allow us to have that fresh new experience and meet new people? Anyone have any advice/experience with dating someone who ended up going to a different university? Share you stories! I'd love to hear them.

freaking out big time
GUYS i'm literally going to SCREAM. i'm so scared i'm not going to get in anywhere. please tell me my marks are ok, i haven't even been in this country for that long & i'm terrified this affected my math mark but wHATEVER. my top choice is uoft and waterloo but i know i'm not getting in to either 'cause i'm dumb, but here are my marks: 
- advanced functios: 75 (final) (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA)
- philosophy: 90 (final)

Dropping Science in Grade 12
So Im in a dilemma, Im thinking of dropping science in grade 12. 
Honestly I don't really enjoy it and out of all 3 my favourite is Chemistry mostly for the labs. We have to choose our courses for next year and i am nervous as my only options would be College or Humanities at University. (I don't want to go into Business lol)

How to be motivated to study for school?
Right now I am in grade 12.
Sometimes I really don't feel like studying and try to put off any work I get.
My attitude is "ah f**k this, ill do it later" and "this is so boring, whats the point of even doing this"..
My study habits are extremely horrible.
4/5 days a week I wont do any schoolwork at all.
Then the day before the test I will stay up all night to study material for a test that I have first period the next morning.
I do not get any sleep at all on that day.
When I first started doing this, I used to get good marks.
However this is now starting to catch up to be.
There are days where I stay up all night and dont even get any studying done.
Right before first period, I decide "f**k this, im gonna skip and write the test tomorrow" and go to bed at like 8 in the morning.
How do I avoid these bad habits?
How do I get the motivation to study for school consistently?
Right now its just high school so I can get away with bad study habits and still pull off pretty good marks.
But when I go to university this will definitley not work, and I am scared of failing.
Please tell me what to do.
Idk if this is only for school, but in general I really dont feel like doing any work or doing anything productive.
I mostly waste time on the internet trying to text people and wait for their replies, watch random youtube videos, browse random online forums, etc.

How To Overcome Adversity After a Recent Setback?
Hi!

Back in Grades 9 and 10 I was a very strong student with high 80s/90s, but then I had a huge setback in Grade 11 when, at the beginning of the school year, I went through a traumatic break from reality. I went through psychosis that caused me to miss an entire semester of Grade 11, which I spent in the hospital choking down anti-psychotic medication and believing I had rabies and that I was going to hell. All in all, it was a horrific experience that resulted in me losing who I used to be - I lost the motivation, I didn't know what the point was in even trying anymore. Because I was in the hospital, I failed all my classes except 1, which I was able to complete on my own over the Christmas holidays, and I got a 92 in the class. Though it wasn't a particularly hard course, it was a credit and I'm proud, considering I was having auditory hallucinations constantly at the time. 

The second semester wasn't that great either. The slow steps to recovery made it hard to be successful. I was, however, able to get my English credit with an 88, a health credit and 3M Math, which was a 90.

I knew I needed to get all my grade 11 credits if I wanted to take my regular Grade 12 credits, so I took three credits in the summer. I took Grade 11 Functions, with an 80, Grade 11 Chemistry with 64, and World Religion with 89.

I'm not saying that these marks are amazing in any shape or form, but I believe it's better than not getting the credits at all. I needed them if I wanted to take Grade 12 courses this year.

I'm slowly getting better after this major setback, but I'm taking it slow.These are the Grade 12 4U/M class grades I have so far:

Studies in Literature: 97% (I took this course the summer before I got sick)
Right now I have:
English: 90%
Advanced Functions: 76%

Next semester I am taking:
Physics 11
World Cultures
Biology

I'm planning to take Data Management in summer school, and I'm going to do a victory lap next year, and plan to take:
Calculus
Chemistry
Physics 
Possibly another class (I want to span these over two semesters)

I know this may seem extremely easy going on my part, but I want to make sure that I'm fully recovered and have figured out how to stay healthy while doing school work at the same time before I head off to University.
My goal for the future is to become a Physician Assistant. I want to go to the University of Guelph for Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, or Arts and Science, and then go to McMaster for the PA program. 
If anyone has any suggestions for motivation, tips for my Advanced Functions class (how to get an 80) or other programs/universities I should keep in mind, I would really appreciate it.

Staying Motivated to Do Well

Motivating yourself is a difficult thing. To some people, the process comes naturally: studying for five hours a day, being punctual, etc. However, many others find it difficult to bring themselves to study, complete their homework, or even attend class. If you are one of these people, then finding a way to motivate yourself is essential. 

1. Set time out to do things not related to school

This may sound counterproductive, but the key is being responsible for the amount of time you dedicate to going to the gym, hanging with friends or laying in bed watching netflix. The purpose of this break is to clear your mind. Low energy can suck the drive out of you, so use fun time sparingly to recharge yourself. When you return to your school work that you can keep pushing through it as you know you'll be rewarded with a break on the weekend. 

2. Surround yourself with motivated students

If you have friends who like reviewing class material and are aiming to excel, then the temptation to go out rather than study may decrease. If you have the same course, bounce ideas off each other and use each other to learn the information in a more fun way. 

3. Make a checklist

Honestly, checking something off my to-do list is extremely satisfying. Seeing what I have to do in writing helps me stay on task. Even simple tasks like putting away the dishes makes me feel like yes I can do this! This small action encourages me to do more until I finally have enough motivation to finish that 10-page essay that I've been putting off. After countless hours of working on it, let yourself feel proud for accomplishing that grueling task. 

4. Changes in Perspective

Things to think about:
Do you want to look back and regret things that you could have done differently?
The harder you work now the more you will benefit from it in the long run.
Dwell on your success, not your failures - use your mistakes to learn

Listening to inspirational videos or consulting an experienced professor or counselor can help keep challenges in perspective.

Short-Term Goals

Thinking about the future can be a stressful thing, and as a result, it may be difficult to act towards the "bigger picture." So, by setting short-term goals accomplishing the larger goal becomes more attainable. These goals include things like: tests, homework or a good attendance. 

Try setting goals at least once every two weeks to meet that long-term goal.

My favorite part of goal setting is the reward. After achieving your goals, think about how you are going to reward yourself so you have an extra incentive to do work. 

Another tip is to write them down (goal description, achievement date, reward), so you can see what you've achieved in the past and what you want to achieve in the future. COntinually ask yourself, during this process, "Are these goals helping me perform better?" and "Will this short-term goal help me reach my long-term goal?"

Letting others know about your personal goals, and educating yourself about what other people are doing to do better can be beneficial. So, what are your short-term goals?  

How do you cope with stress?
All of us get stressed. As students, this is typically caused by assignments, tests, and deadlines.

That said, how do you cope with it? What do you do to lower your stress levels?

Take care of yourself! If you mental health isn't doing well, go to a guidance counselor or your school's wellness center, as they should be able to connect you with people who can help! If you need to, take a break, drink some water, listen to some music, take deep breaths in and out and just remember that YOU GOT THIS!!! If you really need help or you're in a mental health crisis, please call your hospital's local crisis line and get help! because remember, you're worth it <3

I'm Failing 12U Chemistry and Advanced Functions...
I don't know what to do. I genuinely feel like my life is over. My only 'okay' mark this semester is English at an 82%. However, Math and Chem... come midterms, they're both going to be sub 50% and I don't know how to fix it. I've been searching for tutors, but everyone just points to online resources like Khan Academy or PatrickJMT; even my guidance counselor has said the same things. Not that they're bad resources, but I need someone with me to keep me in check and make sure I understand the material.

In hindsight, I should have expected this. What precedes these marks are a 53% and a 57% in 11U Functions and Chemistry respectively. I know that I didn't do well, but I thought it was due to other factors in my life that were hindering my ability to study, but it turns out it was just my bad habits from my earlier years that resurfaced, resulting in such horrid grades. Hell, last year my overall was a 68.6%...

Nowadays, I can't even bring myself to look at my work. I become immensely stressed and then I just start crying because I don't know what else to do. I want to go to university. I really do. I want to be a successful student and return to my parents who sacrificed to invest in both my well-being and future.

I no longer care for exorbitantly high marks, at least not in these two courses. Flat 60% in both is my goal, as that is the lowest mark I can get in order to be eligible for Carleton U's IMD(Interactive Multimedia and Design) program. My dreams before were UfT or UW's CS Programs, but those are so distant that they're no longer plausible.

I've been saying that I'll get myself together for years -- just saying it is not enough anymore. I need to take action, but I don't know how to, and I'm just so afraid that I won't be able to. Everyone around me is sobbing about their low 80s which doesn't help either.

What do you guys think I should do? What course of action do I take? Do I take a victory lap? Do I summon up some sort of godlike willpower and dedicate all of my free hours to studying? Please, if any of you were in a similar situation before and somehow climbed out, let me know how, cause I really can't afford to fall further into this hole I've dug for myself.

How do you de-stress?
When it comes to tests and exams, I easily get stressed out. So I try to calm myself to refresh my brain and think clearly by working out, drinking some tea and watching a funny movie (anyone Monty Python fans?) or taking a warm bath. Everyone has different ways that work for them to get rid of stress. What are some of your ways to de-stress?
Bad senior year grades + dealing with mental illnesses
Hello!
I'm a grade 12 student and I'm not doing so good for two of my most important courses for this semester - academic biology and academic chemistry. I currently have a 56 in bio and a 64 in chemistry, and my marks dropped this much due to a harsh unit test and assignment. It's the second month of school, and I'm already close to giving up on working as hard as I did in the beginning of this semester, and univeristy application submissions + midterm report cards are right around the corner. I'm one of those students that invest most of their day for studying, and try to do everything to the best of my ability.  I've been dealing with depression and anxiety issues for a few years now, which I feel like is taking a poll on how I'm currently feeling now about my future, and at this point I feel like I'm going to get rejected or end up passing these courses with a low mark (and what I need is at least a 90 :/) If someone can advise me on what next steps I can take in encouraging myself/get my grades up in time for early application submission I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello! My fiancé Dj and I (Keri) in February 4th 2018 will be boarding a plane to Bangalore India for a week long mental health education program. Placement abroad with SLV: A UK based organization that provides students with hands-on work experience in the mental health sector. We are writing to ask if you will support with funding our placement! This exciting and challenging placement will give us crucial skills to proceed in our careers. I, Keri am pursuing a career in clinical psychology and aiming for a Master’s and Doctorate to bring clinical counselling to those in need. Dj in the Criminal Justice sector is pursuing a career within the Justice department, and is aiming to gain experience for helping victims and providing unique solutions. It is a special opportunity we have been offered to combine volunteering abroad with hands-on work experience. We are looking forward to working in a new culture in a challenging environment. SLV’s focus on ethical and sustainable projects is something that stood out to us. The idea that this is a work-experience placement and not a holiday is what drove us to apply and volunteer with them. Our placement costs $5,500 and we are working & fundraising hard. Hey Everyone! 

At UNB, we are right in the middle of midterm season. I was wondering what sort of things you folks do to de-stress during this time. 

Myself, I like to run through the town trails while listening to my favourite music! Fredericton is beautiful this time of the year and the trails are breath-taking!

Hey, has anyone here applied for the Loran Scholarship before? I'm in Grade 12 this year, and I am applying for it, but I wanted to know some more about it. What was the process was like for you? Did you get an interview? Any helpful tips for the application form? Were you able to get an interview? 


Things to Keep in Mind During First Year of University
The first-year of university is not easy. It's a change that not many people are expecting to be so drastic. The first thing I would recognize is how important family is...especially if you move away. You're going to be thankful for them every single day that you are away. Show them you care and that you miss them by phone calls. I usually call my parents for about ten minutes while shifting between classes. 

Next, make sure that you are budgeting. Budgeting is SOOOOO important when you're a student. I actually downloaded this great app called "Mint". It allows you to input how much money you have access to spend each week or month, and then you can allocate it to different things such as groceries, fast-food, entertainment, etc. 

Finally, do not put too much stress on your grades. Of course, they're important, and education is the reason you are at university. The opportunities are endless with a proper education, however, so is your mental health. Sacrifice some "me time". Take an afternoon off from studying and play Mario cart with a friend. Take a dip in grades for a small assignment to help a friend who is going through a tough time. Or take a mental health day from classes to watch your favourite movie. Remember that grades are NOT a reflection of your self-worth and that other things matter as well. Remember that you have so much to offer the world, and that cannot be measured. Know that having an education is valued in this society and many people have it, but kindness is a rare trait. Remember that you are a human and perfect is a social construct that people are constantly chasing. Take a step back and relax when you need it. You cannot achieve success if you are burnt out.
